I have found the Rome Carunchio route to work best for me as I can fly in from the Midlands. If you live near to stansted the Pescara flights are the best, but for those who are midlands based, East Midlands to Romewith Ryanair is a good route.
By following the directions by the links below you will be able to navigate your way to the property. I have even added in photo's of the route for once you come off the SS650. Travel from Ciampino takes 3 hours but is a pleasant drive. The journey from Pescara is only 90 minutes, the beauty of this trip is that there is a great hyper market (AUCHAN) opposite the pescara car hire car park . You can stock up on what you need before you travel to the house.
Getting to the house once in Carunchio
Drive into the village past the petrol station and bar on your left, as you approach the centre of the village you can either go the gradual incline route by following the road around that winds upwards or, you can turn right at the green where the statue is, next to the re-cycle bins (To your right) and take the VERY steep hill up where you’ll need to do a hill stop and then turn right at the top of the hill.
As you then follow the road winding upwards you will eventually come to a supermarket on your right (Shuttered up on a Sunday), 200 yards past that shop you will come into the Piazza (Square), drive across the square but drive towards the left far corner, as you approach there are 2 streets, one to right , one to left. The left street is Via Foresta, it’s a tiny street, so be careful passing the parked cars. You will get by, just take your time. You go past a pull in point (right) where they have some bins, after which you will pass a steep concrete slope that veers off and up to the right (A car pull in), if you travel down just a few more yards you will come to a set of steps on your right that go up the side of some green painted garage doors, these steps take you up to the house.
You can unload your luggage here. If you walk up the steps, you go past Giovina’s garden gate (Left) and her front garden. At the top of the steps the house is on your left with a letter box and a number 7 (left of door) above the letter box. Brown Double Doors go into Kitchen.
Electric can be switched on at consumer unit directly next to the kitchen door on your right.
Park the car further down the road on the left alongside the vegetable gardens.
Flights to and from the UK
Belfast, Bristol, Durham, Glasgow, East Midlands, Liverpool, Newcastle, London (Gatwick, Luton and Stansted)
Car hire is strongly recommended and it is advisable to pre-book your car when making flight arrangements. If you arrive into Rome late at night, make sure you can collect your car. I didn't and had to spend a fortune on taxi's to and from the nearby hotel.
Remember to get the car hire park assistant to double check all the scratches on the car and mark them on your paperwork. You may even wish to photo any major scratches with a date encrypted digital shot.
It is strongly recommended that you hire a car if you want to get around the region of Abbruzzo whilst you are in Italy. Expect to have to get used to some steep hills.
The journeys from Pescara (1hr 30) or Bari (2hr 30) are the easiest. Take the A14 until you reach Vasto South (Follow Vasto Sud) At the Vasto Sud exit you need to joi the SS650 which will be sign posted "Isernia".
