Well worth a visit if travelling to and from Roma Airport.
The battle of Monte Cassino in the spring of 1944 was fundamental in the German Military Retreat and the liberation of Northern Italy just prior to D-Day. Carunchio was one of the 1st villages to be liberated by the English in 1944!!
180,000 Young Soldiers lost their lives battling to free Monte Cassino from German occupation. Today you can visit both the English and Polish war graves and reflect on the sheer enormity of the mass destruction caused during months and months of carpet bombing.
The Monestary itself has been rebuilt and can be seen from miles around, visitors enter silently and try to make sense of quite what life must have been like for the many soldiers involved in the various battles.
Monte Cassino is stunning and inspiring, it brings life into perspective and demonstrates quite why todays pensioners deserve the utmost care and respect throughout their twilight years.
